The law firm De Cotta McKenna y Santafé is pleased to announce its sponsorship of this year’s Anglican Church Christmas Carol Service, taking place at St Michael’s Church (Iglesia de San Miguel) in Plaza Andalucía, Nerja, at 4 pm on Sunday, 19th December.

The Reverend Geoff Johnston, Priest in Charge of the Anglican Parish of Nerja and Almuñécar, will be conducting the service.

Entrance to this Carol service is free – everyone is welcome to come along, and early attendance is encouraged. Any charity donations received at the end of the service will go to The Sisters of the Good Samaritan (“Hermanas del Buen Samaritano”) to help boost funds for their much-needed residential care centre for the elderly in Nerja, which they are hoping to open as soon as possible.

Festive refreshments will be served afterwards in the meeting room located at the back of the church (opposite Los Cuñaos bar).

The Reverend Geoff Johnston

Father Geoff as he’s known, came to Nerja in June 2008 and he is here with his new wife Carol, whom he met at his former church in Dudley, West Midlands. Father Geoff was keen to do something different and has a love of the continent, so when he saw the Nerja post advertised in the Church Press, he jumped at the chance. Nerja may be a seaside resort, but Fr Geoff is not here to relax and unwind. “Far from it”, says Fr Geoff. “I’m happy to be here, but I came to do a serious job. The church has a mission to reach out to people, and this is what we are doing. For example, we’ve recently set up the monthly “Messy Church” initiative – it’s aimed at families, and is a crafts- and activities-based programme with a biblical theme – this is one way to help people grow in their faith”.

Fr Geoff was brought up in Kent as one of three in a Christian household, and – unlike his two siblings – felt the call to be a priest when he was12 years old. He was ordained at the age of 24.

When time allows, Fr Geoff enjoys caravanning, gardening, swimming and singing in the CoraXalia International choir, who are performing at this event. CoraXalia is based in La Viñuela, and was formed in October 2006 by accomplished and experienced soprano Marisa Bell-Young, its current president. The name derives from “Cor” for coro/choir, “axa” for “Axarquía” and “alia” for “Salia”, the river running through La Viñuela. Also set to perform are the barbershop harmony group “Tropical Tones”, who are based in the province of Granada and were also formed in 2006.

Parking

Regretfully there is no parking nearby, but those attending are encouraged to park in Nerja’s free car park, a five-minute walk away by taking a right turn at the roundabout situated at the beach end of Calle Ruperto Anduez. It’s a ten minute walk on foot from the Balcón de Europa, walking along Calle Cristo (Post Office street), turning right at Herrara Orla, then first left, then first right.

London Marathon

A husband and wife team from Torrox are running in this year’s London Marathon.

Amanda and Phil Stockton have been busy training in order to raise as much money as possible for children’s charity, Barnados.
It all began when Amanda hit 40 and felt that apart from her career and family she had not achieved much. After watching last years race on TV she decided to enter for 2010.

Phil, who has ran seven marathons in the past, felt he had one more left in him.

Training for the London Marathon has continued throughout the winter. Undeterred by the bad weather they are now nearing the end, with only a few weeks remaining.

Amanda would like to thank all of her chiropodist patients for their support and donations.

The pair are now organising a charity music gig at El Ancla, Torrox Costa, on 17th April at 8pm. Local band Not to Fall are playing and there is a free buffet. Please make a donation on the door. There will also be a great raffle with prizes donated by local businesses including golf lessons, one night at a b&b and a sailing experience.

If anyone wants to donate a service or gift voucher for the raffle, contact Amanda on 636 866 715.

Panto Time

It’s panto time!

ACT ONE of Cómpeta’s very first summer pantomime has been successfully completed.

A lively group of local people got together at the Balcon Hotel to volunteer their help to put on this June’s much anticipated production of Cinderella.

The panto, very much a blue adult version of the traditional tale, will raise money for two charities: CUDECA, the cancer hospice charity (75%), and the Sasha Roberts Scholarship Fund (25%).

Susan Hannam, Director of Nursing for CUDECA, spoke eloquently of the work the charity does in our region and how vitally important fund raising is.

Panto Director Tom Sobel explained that the script for the show has been donated by the Lewes Arms Dramatic Society (LADS) in Sussex which
has been performing adult pantomimes for thirty-four years. Because of the East Sussex group’s involvement part of the money raised will go to the Sasha Roberts fund. The charity was set up to honour a local artist and teacher who was involved in amateur dramatics in East Sussex.

Tom was keen to point out the essence of the production:
“This is definitely a panto that breaks all the rules but that’s part of the fun. It’s first and foremost a community event where we hope everyone who comes along will have a really good time. It’s comedy but with a serious intent to raise as much money as possible for two extremely worthwhile causes.”

The leading role of Cinderella has now been cast and will be played by 25 year-old Lisa Edelman. Lisa, who is a ceramics artist, is also a member of Cómpeta choir One Voice.

Lisa will be joined by amongst others Jean Sampson as Buttons, Chester Williams as Ugly Sister Hydrangea playing opposite Ray Rowden’s Antirrhinum, Katherine Paterson as The fairly Godmother, and debut performances by Peter van de Water as Dandini and Martin Robinson as Baron Hardup. The photograph shows the ensemble to date.

“Not every role has been cast yet, so there is still time for anyone who is interested to volunteer.” said Tom. “We still need more actors and crew.”

Cinderella will be held at the Balcon Hotel, Cómpeta on Saturday June 19th and Sunday June 20th. A pre-performance supper will be available – price 15 euros for three courses plus wine. Tickets for the show are 12 euros, which includes a welcome drink and tapas and they will go on sale in May so make a note in your diary!
