Performances
This year The Reverend Geoff Johnston will be hosting a traditional Carol Service that will also feature performances by The CoraXalia International Choir; The Cámara Cantilena Music Group; and Joe Boyle. CoraXalia International Choir is based in La Viñuela, and was formed in October 2006 by accomplished and experienced soprano Marisa Bell-Young, its current president. The name derives from “Cor” for coro/choir, “axa” for “Axarquía” and “alia” for “Salia”, the river running through La Viñuela.
The Cámara Cantilena Music Group are a well-established acapela group based in Nerja, and they specialise in singing medieval church music; whilst Joe Boyle is a seasoned performer and long-term resident of Frigiliana.

Charity – The collection will be for Nerja’s The Sisters of the Good Samaritan.
Refreshments – De Cotta Law will again this year be providing festive refreshments after the concert and holding a fund raffle for The Sisters of the Good Samaritan.

Riogordo Galería

Riogordo Galería celebrates it’s first year.

To celebrate it’s first season of bringing the art and crafts of Andalucía to the Axarquía, Riogordo Galería is having two weeks of discounted prices. Customers can also enjoy a free glass of mulled wine.
“If you are looking for something unique to give for Christmas come and take a look,” said gallery owner Ken Church. “If you buy something not only will you save money but you will also be supporting some extraordinarly talented people.”

Opening times have been extended and the gallery will be open Wednesday to Sunday 10-2pm and 4-8pm from 1st to 12th December only. Riogordo Galería will then closing for the winter and reopening in April 2011.
Despite the gloom and doom of the economy Riogordo Galería opened it’s doors last Easter and has stuck rigidly to its original raisons d’être: all things must be creative, original and from Andalusía.
“The art has been quite a mix as was the reaction to it,” said Ken Church, “which is no surprise as I had done nothing like this before. It’s been a steep learning curve for me.”

Next year, starting in April, he plans to have more professional artists with both traditional and contemporary styles. The different crafts in the gallery will continue to be promoted as Ken believes all things creative are an art form.
“It’s not for me to say that a fine piece of needlework is any less ‘art’ than an oil painting, but I do concede that somewhere on the creative journey something can become ‘fine art’ and assume a higher level of perception.”
The gallery will continue to champion local artists and craftsmen next year and will be publishing it’s 2011 programme in March.

Boulder Walling

Boulder walling is a common feature here in Andalusia mainly used as a retaining wall. They can be an attractive feature and relatively inexpensive to build when compared to other walling types, which is why they are so ubiquitous.

So far so good! The question is, why do so many of them fall down?

The problem stems from the fact that the builder does not fully understand the land structure were the wall is erected.

Boulder walls are just dry-stone walls on a larger scale. Dry-stone walls are classed as gravity walls. They rely on the principal that the weight of the wall itself maintains the horizontal pressure necessary to maintain strength and integrity in the wall.

If you look at large boulder walls closely you will notice that any given boulder is only touching its neighbour in four or five places and so there is very little structural strength in the wall. They tend to be built only two or three boulders deep, (when they should be four or five). The problem with this is that if one boulder moves the adjoining boulders will also move and the wall will come tumbling down like stacked cards.

The reason they are prone to move is that they are often back filled with the soil that was excavated to build the wall, instead of aggregates.  This soil often leaches through the wall leaving a cavity behind it and with the weight of the wall a boulder will slip. They tend not to be built on a reinforced concrete footing and the weight of the wall is not spread out and movement can occur. There is also ground movement during the summer months when the ground contracts and in the winter when it expands with water retention. So there are three factors occurring, land movement through contraction and expansion and the soil leaching through the wall, added to the fact that we live in a earthquake zone all adds up to a very glaringly obvious fact…they are not safe.

Which is why you will never see them built in any other country (were planning restrictions are more thoroughly controlled). Stone block walling is different as there is more friction acting to give strength.

LT Construction should be your first choice in deciding on which approach to take in designing a retaining wall. Please contact LT Construction to make sure you get this most important element of a garden designed and built well. http://www.ltconstruction.es/

Orange Grove Kitchens

This month The Sentinella caught up with Mark from Orange Grove Kitchens.

Kami:Tell us about Orange Grove Kitchens?
Mark:Orange Grove Carpentry Services has been going for about four years now. Recently I’ve been making more and more kitchens and I’d forgotten just how much I enjoy making them…hence the new advert.

Kami:What makes you different?
Mark:Well I’m not a high street shop or showroom. I do almost everything myself, from design to completion. It´s nice to wander around a showroom and get a 3D autocad drawing, but all this adds to your cost.

Kami:Talk us through getting a quote.
Mark:I come to your house, discuss exactly what you want from your kitchen, then I do a freehand drawing, we look through the brochures, the client chooses their colour/ style. Finally, the appliances and worktops are chosen. I then provide a quote with all this information. A day is then arranged to visit my supplier where the client can confirm their choices.

Kami:Can you beat any high street quote?
Mark:Truth be told I’m not sure. It’s not a promise as you never know what deals other companies are offering, but what I do promise is that I’ll do my best. I will not work from other companies drawings because in think its unethical”

Kami:Ok Mark, last question. How long does a kitchen take to complete?
Mark:Generally there’s a three week lead in time to get the doors and panels made. I like to start on a Monday and I try to have it completed within a week. I work on Sundays if I have to, to ensure the client comes first as no one wants to be without a kitchen for more than a week.

CANVAS, PAPER & SILK
An Exhibition of Work by Dianne Warren

Riogordo Galería.
6th -29th August, 2010

Dianne has had a paint brush in her hand since the age of 5 she says. Her enthusiasm for her art is very evident in her strong use of colour, brush work and the wide variety of mediums.

A long standing member of the Art Society of Traditional Painters in the UK, she came to Spain 5 years ago via North Wales and Dubai. While in Dubai she taught art and pottery to the children of the Royal Family.

“I am captivated by the Andalusian landscape and the intensity of the light and shade,” she said, ” the sunlight and shadows constantly fuel my inspiration.”

For her work she uses oil, watercolour, pastels and acrylics and it encompasses landscapes, flowers, houses. Recently she has added silk painting to her repertoire and has silk cushions and silk paintings on display.

“She is a superb artist with a very strong sense of colour” said gallery owner Ken Church, “and with 25 items on display from small pictures to large canvases this is a very good exhibition to visit.”

Shop Renamed In Torre Del Mar!

Discover items from seven to seven hundred euros at Lukuma, previously known as Papaya…! These young, multi-cultural entrepreneurs in Torre del Mar, aim to provide a wide range of goods – fashion clothing, jewellery and accessories – at attractive prices for clientèle who are on the look-out for something a bit different.

What makes you different?
Well, since we started five years ago with our shop on the Paseo de Larios, and Ellie almost ten years ago in Pink Flamenco, Nerja, we’ve always focused on exclusive items at prices that won’t break the bank. In other words, whatever your budget, you’ll find original products at a reasonable price. For example, we sell Spanish and French fashion goods, which are a bit different from those available in large retail chains.

How’s business in Lukuma?
We can’t complain. There are customers in the Torre del Mar region with excellent taste and dress sense. We also benefit from tourism and as business continues well into the evening, and the nightlife on the Paseo de Larios is lively, we stay open to around midnight.

Besides working with brands, you have created your own signature in jewellery, Ñusta Beads. Is it not risky in these times?
Yes it is, but we’re confident that our customers love Ñusta. Our strength is the quality and our prices, which are lower than other charms, beads and bracelets. We have many sales outlets such as franchises throughout the Costa del Sol.

Music is important in your shop. Why?
Music creates a pleasant ambiance and provides good energy. On the Paseo Larios in Torre del Mar, Lukuma is part of a leisure environment with nearby cafés, bars, chill out terraces, ice cream parlours, bars, pubs and restaurants. In fact you can spend the whole day here. So yes, music is very important to the Lukuma image.

Are your prices affordable?
Of course! We have articles and accessories for any budget, from a bracelet of 5€ up to bracelets for 500€. Our more affluent customers are also looking for casual clothes, shoes and jewelry, so reasonable prices do not mean that quality suffers. We also realise that although our strong sales period is in the summer, our most faithful customers are local residents.

What are the new trends?
We’ve imported silver from Turkey, fashion bracelets and sarongs from Bali and bags and clothes from France. Our aim is to tap into products from various countries, so we travel frequently to keep abreast of the latest trends. That is the great pleasure of working in the fashion industry and if you visit Lukuma you’ll have always a new experience.

Boat Trips In Spain

Why not enjoy the relaxing sounds and sights of the sea this summer and take a boat trip with friends or family?

The beautiful coastline of La Herradura boasts one of the prettiest bays in Europe, a truly perfect setting to lie on the deck with a cold drink and soak up the sun.

Paul and Tony offer luxurious days out on either their 12 metre Motor Cruiser, or their water sports speedboat.

The Motor Cruiser is moored at the small and idyllic Marina del Este. Relax in style as you sip Cava (included in the price), swim, snorkel,  sun bathe in one of the sheltered coves along the beautiful stretch of coastline from Nerja to Almuñecar, or even engage in a spot of dolphin-watching!

“We see many dolphins on our excursions,” said Tony. “On one occasion the dolphins jumped around for an hour or so, riding the bow of the boat. It was the most amazing display.”

The Motor Cruiser has sun decks on the bow, shaded areas to keep out of the sun and WC facilities.

Paul and Tony’s Sports Boat is eight metres long, with skiing, wake boarding, rings, etc. Tony has all the knowledge to teach, including children who are learning to waterski for the first time. The Sports Boat is moored in Torrox and they are able to pick up clients at many locations on the way.

“We have many satisfied customers who say that their days boating are the best days of their holiday,” said Paul. “If the weather is bad, or the wind is too high, we’ll not go out, as the day can be ruined and we’d rather reschedule. We pride ourselves on making the day enjoyable but safe.

Life jackets are provided as a safety measure on both boats.

Call Paul on 672 042 131, or Tony on 616 034 846 and they’ll accommodate most requirements and negotiate rates flexible with your needs.
