Alfarnatejo

This simple farming village, also called Palancos, is located 50 kilometres from Malaga and 42 kilometres from Torre del Mar on the Route of Olive Oil and Mountains. At an altitude of 858 metres, Alfarnatejo sits among the so-called “Pirineos del Sur” (the Pyrenees of the South) and offers views of the impressive Mount Chamizo and El Gallo.

The municipal park, Miguel Alba Luque, named after the last Republican mayor of the town, is nestled just below the mountains.  Here you can rest on a bench or exercise on the communal gym equipment. Also, the 16th century parish church of Santo Cristo de Cabrilla merits a visit. This rectangular structure is traditional to the period with a Mudejar-style red brick tower and two naves separated by semicircular arches.

Alfarnatejo is simple – complete with a village square, Santander bank, town hall, four tapas bars and a restaurant overlooking the park and mountains. At the same time, Alfarnatejo’s simplicity is also its charm as technology-obsessed culture seems a world away.

If you visit the village during the first weekend in August you can join the native Alfarnateños and celebrate the annual Fiesta of Gazpacho. Take part in the festivities, try the traditional Spanish soup and enjoy the Flamenco competition!

Getting to Alfarnatejo: The easiest route is to take the road between Rio Gordo and Periana. Turn left just before Mondron and drive through Pulgarín and continue to climb until you reach an altitude of 858 metres… where you’ll find Alfarnatejo!
